The Thorn Group use Magento & Drupal for brand websites, and experience high infrastructure costs for AWS hosting. Key was to reduce monthly spend without reducing performance. Project goals included separating Magento/Drupal sites, identifying servers for retirement, and strategically thinking about instance sizes against a marketing calendar.
Due to a variety of projects running concurrently, the Thorn Group noted their monthly billing was increasing regularly but not necessarily with an output of increased site performance. They engaged Playhouse to investigate the current set up, and look at ways the instances could be optimised.
WHAT WE DID
- Audited and documented Thorn’s AWS infrastructure - including review each server setup (OS installed, patches, software, versions, databases, websites, DNS records, cache services, mail services)
- Provided recommendations on opportunities for cost saving
- Managed and executed the recommendations then ran post-implementation tests to ensure project success
The Thorn Group are now saving approximately 55% on their monthly costs, have better visibility of their infrastructure, have the ability to upscale/downscale in line with marketing needs while maintaining/improving site performance.
